So here in TN it is still quite warm. We have had a few cold days though that warrant me to pull out the coats. Now it is true that dogs are able to handle colder temperatures than we are but it is also true that they grow accustomed to their environments. So if you live in a warm state and then go up to New York, your dog will need a coat just like you will. Also, smaller dogs cannot hold heat as well as larger dogs. And it makes sense that dogs will longer hair will not need coats as much as dogs with shorter hair. (read more on the topic here, here and here.
Of course, the best way to tell is if they don't want to go outside or shiver, just like people do. Now coats do not have to be expensive. Pancake wears a coat (she shivers when it is cold out) that I made of two layers of fleece and sewed them together. But if you want to buy one there are LOTS available.
Oh My Dog Supplies has some really cute coats that do not break the bank. How cute is this plaid one? It is different prices for sizes and starts at around $18 and goes up to $28.
In the Company of Dogs is an excellent place to buy quality dog supplies. Their coats are a little (or lot) more expensive. These reversible down jackets run $80. But they do offer some cheaper alternatives.
What about a heated bed? This bed actually heats & cools! I found a website called Cozy Winters that has lots of pet products to keep your pets warm.
Remember, as it gets colder don't forget about your pets! They have to deal with the weather change too!

I didn't know there were cooling beds.....my dog would love this. She really would've loved it this past summer. It was so hot here in NC that I had to opt out of daily walks with my dog. :/
